I just got a new AR-556 and I am wanting to see if the lack of symmetry is normal. Please see attached pic.

Thank you,

This edge is rough ? Probably from the casting. Pic below.

Hey, the opening in the upper where the brass would exit.
It is a bit rough there and it is wider towards the front.
All the pictures I found online to compare it too only show a tiny notch for the dust cover.

That little half moon shaped cut at the top center of the ejection port is there simply to accommodate the detent plunger on the ejection port, and to make closing the cover a little smoother. You will find the same thing on a Colt LE6920 upper receiver and it is entirely normal.

As for the "roughness" so long as the ejection port cover closes fully and opens and closes smoothly it is of absolutely no functional significance. Unless the carbine looks much worse in the flesh than it does in the photo, I think you are making a mountain out of a molehill. This is not some expensive heirloom rifle with a beautiful blueing and walnut stock. It is an AR and from the lower end of the price spectrum. ARs are butt-ugly and they are supposed to be.

Sometimes the dust cover not latching closed has to do with the detent and spring on the ejection port cover, seen that a few times. If that was my rifle, I shoot it, and enjoy it.

I was thinking about it, is it possible that since ruger is making several calibers on the ar556 platform that require larger ports like the 450 bushmaster, or 350 legend that they are making all the uppers with wider ports to save money since it doesn't effect function? The 450 requires a bigger opening to allow proper ejection. Just a thought. Or if they aren't it could be that a 450 opened upper receiver made its way on to a 5.56 rifles, very hard to tell the difference unless you use a micrometer on it to double check.

However either way it won't effect its function. Run the bolt carrier literally wet with lube for a couple hundred rounds until it breaks in. Thats how I run mine, the whole battalion of them.

Yep...I bought this one as a beater/truck gun, not worried much about cosmetics on this one (or any of mine actually :) ). I've put about 500 rounds through it so far, zero issues...that matters more than a functioning dust cover to me.

Always, always inspect any weapon, lower or upper before you take it into your possession. Do not accept it if it does not meet your approval. Regardless of what the seller tells you, period. You do not have to accept it. I have seen this time and time again. with weapons taken into possession and then the buyer finds a flaw. Take the little bit of extra time and due diligence to inspect you purchase. If it's an AR, take the upper off, pull the bcg, inspect it, the chamber, everything. Takes a few minutes. My 1/2 cent worth.

So you pay $600 for a complete AR15 and expect Daniel Defense, BCM or Noveske quality?! At some point we need to be realistic with our purchases!

Just shoot it and enjoy a great AR for $600!!! Some of us on here expect WAY too much from Ruger, especially considering the prices they charge us!

Shoddy workmanship. I see this so many times now with Rugers of a all makes and models and always the same comments, "live with it, if it works." Send it back, like most people you work hard for your money. There should be some way Ruger can check these. Either they do and find it and send it out thinking no one will complain or they do not check them out for quality. You cannot have it both ways. Totally unacceptable.
